BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Parts of the Dakotas are in for a winter blast leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday.

The National Weather Service says up to nine inches of snow could fall on northwest and north central North Dakota late Tuesday through early Thursday. The system also is forecast to bring winds gusting up to 35 mph, making travel treacherous and dropping wind chills well below zero.

The rest of North Dakota and western South Dakota also are on the alert for bad weather.

The University of Mary in North Dakota says it's canceling on-campus classes in Bismarck and Fargo late Tuesday and Wednesday so students traveling for the holiday can get a head start on travel while the weather is still nice.
