Dorgan Says Nation Needs to Reduce Deficit

Retiring U.S. Sen. Byron Dorgan predicts that Congress will wind up extending tax cuts for everyone instead of letting the cuts expire at the end of the year.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Retiring U.S. Sen. Byron Dorgan predicts that Congress will wind up extending tax cuts for everyone instead of letting the cuts expire at the end of the year.

The North Dakota Democrat gave an interview that aired Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union" talk show.

Dorgan says he thinks extending the tax cuts for everyone is the wrong remedy for the country's economy because giving tax cuts to the rich won't help reduce the deficit.

Dorgan says he'd like to see tax cuts extended for everyone making up to $250,000 annually for only two years.

Dorgan did not run for re-election this year and is leaving the Senate after 18 years. He will be replaced in January by Republican Gov. John Hoeven.
