Detroit Lakes, Minn. (WDAY TV) - A 22-year-old may not have his big catch of the day in the record books because of the government shutdown. John Gergen from Phoenix, Arizona landed a 57 inch muskie on Lake Sallie on July first using a bulldog lure.

The standing record is 54 years old and measures 56 inches. His family owns a cabin on the lake and Gergen says he fishes there at least once a year.

When his brother was ready to go in for the day Gergen had a feeling he needed to stay out a little longer and his feeling was right.

“Then I saw him and I saw his head and I knew he was a monster. My whole pole, it just started diving on me. He kept diving on me because usually a lot of the times they like to jump up and this one was trying to stay down on me,” Gergen said.

Although the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is closed due to the government shutdown, Gergen will still try to get his Muskie in the record books.
