ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - The University of Minnesota plans to shut down its campuses statewide over the winter break in a cost-cutting move.

In the past, the university's campuses have stayed up and running during the holiday break, although at a slower pace. But this year the school is looking for ways to trim its budget.

University spokesman Dan Wolter tells Minnesota Public Radio News that only hospitals, some labs and a few residence halls will remain open.

Wolter says the shutdown will put libraries, classrooms and office buildings in "weekend mode." Students won't have access to most services.

The university expects to save $160,000 on its power bill from Christmas to New Year's on the Minneapolis campus alone because of the shutdown.
