Nickname Deadline May Be Extended

The State Board of Higher Education says an extension to the deadline for UND to gain name sake approval to continue to use of the Fighting Sioux Nickname and logo is likely. That after Spirit Lake Sioux gave U-N-D perpetual use of the name on Friday.

The State Board of Higher Education says an extension to the deadline for UND to gain name sake approval to continue to use of the Fighting Sioux Nickname and logo is likely.

That after Spirit Lake Sioux gave U-N-D perpetual use of the name on Friday.

The board says its probable the deadline could be extended to October 15th to give the Standing Rock tribe more time to have a reservation-wide vote there.

Higher Ed Board member Grant Shaft says this is one piece of the puzzle and it gives them a reason to at least give Standing Rock another chance.

Standing Rock will elect new officials on September 30th.

The first meeting with new officials will be October 14th.

Shaft says that would allow time to see if a new council would allow a reservation-wide vote, the current council has not.

"The board does not want the October one deadline to be the hurdle, we want to accommodate them if they truly want to have a vote on this issue but it has to be within reason."

Shaft says if new officials could prove they were having an election and give an election date, a longer extension would be considered even beyond October 15th.

The board will have a teleconference in the next week to vote on the October 15th extension.
