MANKATO, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota authorities have closed state highways across the southwestern part of the because of snow and gusting winds that have produced near white-out conditions.

Minnesota Department of Transportation spokeswoman Rebecca Arndt says visibility has been bad all day. She says the onset of nightfall will make driving conditions even more treacherous.

Roads will remain closed until further notice in the following 13 counties: Blue Earth, Brown, Cottonwood, Faribault, Jackson, Le Seuer, Martin, Nicollet, Nobles, Rock, Sibley, Waseca and Watonwan.

Authorities are asking residents to stay home instead of venturing out. They say police need to focus on serious emergencies, not on vehicles that slid off the road because the motorists insisted on driving in hazardous conditions.
