Commuters driving into Fargo-Moorhead from on Highway 10 saw a strange site this morning; A giant globe rolling west towards Fargo.
Out of the lakes and on to the prairie walks Erik Bendl, his dog Nice and one really big globe. They stop for a drink along the Clay-Becker county line on Highway 10. The travelling companions and their ball are averaging about 10 miles a day on their trek from Sheboygan, Wisconsin to where ever they can get to in Nebraska before the snow flies. So what would possess a carpenter by trade to walk thousand of miles with a big ball and into a strong prairie wind?
Erik Bendl – Walking for Diabetes: “Promote this simple message. Love yourself go for a walk. I lost my mom to diabetes she was a state representative. Like to many people she was taking care of others, she didn't take care of herself and I lost her at the age of 54.”
The globe is just a left over from an old camp counselor job and it does the job grabbing the attention.
Erik Bendl: “Whether they just think I’m a crazy man on the side of the road. At least I bring smiles to everybody’s faces.”
For Nice it seems like a dogs dream
Erik Bendl: “He gets to look for snakes and frogs all day long and get loved on by people and walk 10 or 12 miles.”
Benndl is hoping that the people he meets will take his message of walking for health, and Bendl has a support vehicle that he relies on the generosity of strangers to give him a ride back to each day. In addition to the generosity of people around here there on more revelation that's made on this trip.
Erik Bendl: “You've got so many lakes in Minnesota.”
Bendl is from Kentucky and has walked in 26 states and hopes to eventually walk through all 50.
