Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- Many people consider Sunday a day of rest, but that wasn't the case for a Grand Forks congregation. Members of Calvary Lutheran went out into the community for a volunteer blitz.

Tim Schlinker, put down his Sunday prayer book, and picked up a scissors to prepare blankets for a hospice group.

Tim Schlinker/ Volunteer: "We came here today not knowing what to expect, and this is what we ended up doing."

Schlinker and hundreds of fellow members of Calvary Lutheran Church are doing what they call a mission blitz.

Sarah Raymond / Mission Blitz Organizer: "This gives us the opportunity to be the church and go out and do what we are saying what we are doing as Christians."

Those projects include making bowls that will later be sold to raise money for local food shelves. Other church members went out into the community to help out with a number of odd jobs.

Everett Knudsvig / Volunteer: "We were kept busy steady, working with the clothing that has been donated to the mission."

Kaija Dockter / Volunteer: "I went to go clean at options. And it's for handicap people. "

Raymond: “Show up and they get to serve as a family parents and kids together."

While the labor is intended to spread the love. People like Schlinker say they get something out of it too.

Tim Schlinker : "For me it made me feel better to help other people "

About six hundred people helped with the mission.
