Parts of the region are in for some snow starting Monday.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for counties south of U.S. Highway 2.

The Weather Service says a low pressure system will move out of the northern high plains and in the Dakotas on Monday and into Monday night. The heavier snow will spread along and south of a line from New Rockford to Hillsboro and then to Park Rapids. Due to the potential for heavy snow, a winter storm warning was issued.

The Service says more uncertainty exists in the northern valley, therefore a winter storm watch was issued for northern North Dakota counties. Strong winds aren't expected with the system, however winds could reach up to 20 mph and could cause drifting snow in open areas.

Snow is expected to develop along the Highway 2 corridor around noon Monday. The snow should gradually spread into the northern valley and portions of northwest Minnesota later on Monday afternoon.

There is a potential for widespread snowfall of 4 to 7 inches, with isolated amounts of higher accumulation.
