A longtime Walsh County sheriff's deputy who was fired after running for sheriff against his boss has filed a lawsuit in federal court.

Sheriff Lauren Wild defeated Ron Nord by 64 to 36 percent in the November election. Wild fired Nord the day after the election, claiming that Nord spread lies about him during the campaign. Nord says he ran a clean campaign.

The result caused some Walsh County residents to file a recall petition against Wild. The county auditor plans to review the petition signatures after Christmas.

Nord's lawsuit accuses Wild of wrongful termination and defamation. Nord says he suffered economic damages in the form of earnings and pension benefits, and other damages including mental anguish, emotional distress, and injury to reputation.

Wild was not available for comment.
