Last week, the city of Devils Lake spent about $12,000 clearing snow from city streets. The amount the city has spent on snow before the actual start of winter is already above average.
"When I set the budget in July, I looked at the last 20 years and we've actually been way over what our averages have been the last three years, we've been way over," Devils Lake City Auditor Terry Johnston said.
The one thing the city has going for it is that this year's revenues exceeded the budget by about $35,000 which leaves them with a $22,000 surplus.
"We may end up $23 to $25,000 over budget but we've got that $35,000 surplus with the revenues, so we should be fine for this year," Johnston said.
January 1st brings a new budget year and the city has already increased the amount of money dedicated to snow removal.
More money will be spent yet this year as the city cleans up from the latest snowstorm this week at a cost of about $6,000 and residential areas next week at a price of $1,000 a day.
"If you drive around town, there's a lot of snow in town, so we're going to have to gradually start hauling some of that out. There's just no place to put it anymore," Johnston said.
Without the surplus, the city of Devils Lake would be $13,000 over budget.
"Hopefully we don't get another snowfall within the next week," Johnston said.
