A new smoking ordinance goes into effect in Devils Lake on July 1st, so many bar operators will be making changes in the new year.
Champions is one of many bars located downtown and there isn't much room to build a smoking shelter. They do have a back room with proper ventilation, but nothing is being set in stone because some bar owners are looking for a loophole in the ordinance.
Jessica Whetter is the day manager at Champions. She said she's heard from many customers who aren't happy with the smoking ban. She's even worked for a business who chose to go non-smoking and has seen a loss of revenue.
"Hopefully it won't hit us too hard, but we do anticipate at least a quarter or three months to six months of it being slow," said Whetter.
Whetter says some people have been reading the ordinance and there are some gray areas that need to be looked at.
Devils Lake Mayor Dick Johnson says he's hoping to schedule a meeting with bar owners so that some rules and regulations can be clarified.
