FARGO – Minor injuries have been reported after a set of risers collapsed Thursday at West Acres mall while a choir from Carl Ben Eielson Middle School was performing, school and mall officials said today.

Mall General Manager Rusty Papachek said the risers collapsed about 8:30 p.m. during the Carl Ben Honor Choir’s concert.

Papachek called it “a very unfortunate incident” and said that, so far, the injuries seem to be bumps and bruises. He said if there are more serious injuries, all medical claims will be directed to the mall’s insurance company.

The risers are three steps and about 2 feet high, Papacheck said. They were used at the mall for at least 13 years. They have already been replaced, he said. The new risers are ready to be used, but probably won’t be employed until the next choir performance, which is set for Monday, he said.

“At this point, we’re not aware of any severe injuries. Just soreness,” said Peggy Johnson, an administrative assistant at Carl Ben Eielson.

She said the choir, led by teacher Renee Hansen, is performing in the community today.

Papacheck said the choir would be at the mall about 11:45 a.m. today and that he planned to apologize and buy them lunch in the mall’s food court.
