FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A former North Dakota National Guard soldier has been sentenced to more than 17 years in prison on child pornography charges.

Bernard Fischer, of West Fargo, had pleaded guilty earlier to five counts, including one charge of coercion and enticement.

The U.S. attorney's office says the 33-year-old Fischer made plans to meet a 14-year-old girl at a Fargo mall for the purpose of having sex with her. Instead he was arrested by Fargo police.

Authorities say Fischer exchanged child pornography with individuals in the United States while he was stationed in Kosovo. He was discharged from the National Guard on Dec. 22, 2010.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon says the case should send the message that people who target children will face lengthy prison sentences.
