Minnesota DNR Suggests Raising Hunting, Fishing Fees

BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota wardens are suggesting that the cost of hunting and fishing licenses be raised to keep pace with inflation.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says its proposal would prevent the state's Game and Fish Fund from being depleted by 2015.

The fund helps pay for the conservation officers and biologists who maintain wildlife and fish habitat. Minnesota Public Radio says more than half the fund comes from license fees.

DNR spokesman Dave Schad says the fee hike wouldn't be to create new programs but to maintain current ones.

Newly appointed DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr agrees that raising fees might be necessary.

But it might be hard to get the Legislature to approve fee hikes. Republicans control both the House and Senate, and many campaigned against tax and fee increases.
