North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple issued an emergency order Tuesday to provide flood protection to the Devils Lake Basin, including the counties of Benson, Nelson, Ramsey, Towner and the Spirit Lake Nation.

“The citizens in the Devils Lake Basin are facing the constant threat of flooding and this action will allow emergency preparations for spring flooding to go forward,” Dalrymple said in an a Tuesday release.

Dalrymple is also seeking a presidential emergency declaration that would assist the Devils Lake area in the on-going flood battle. The presidential declaration would allow for federal resources to be disbursed and financial assistance to help cities, counties and tribal areas respond to the spring flooding.

The request for a presidential emergency comes after the National Weather Service projected a substantial rise in the level of Devils lake this spring.

Gov. Dalrymple is also seeking $5.8 million in federal matching grant funds to help the city of Minnewaukan.

“The city of Minnewaukan is experiencing flood-related problems at the lake’s current level and any additional flooding this spring would create serious problems for home owners, businesses, the school and the city,” Dalrymple said. “We are committed to doing our part in providing an effective response to spring flooding. We are also working with all stakeholders for a permanent solution that will end the on-going stress and loss experienced by the people of Minnewaukan.”
