Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- It didn't really feel like Christmas for some of us. We had no snow on the ground and near record high temperatures. But one Grand Forks family made the best of this brown Christmas.

For most people, building snowmen and playing hockey aren't on the list this Christmas...

Mark Maurer: "There is a big family tradition for the Barsness family up here on Christmas day to try and find some ice to skate on."

Mark Maurer is in town with his wife visiting his in-laws. They have a Christmas tradition to ice skate outside. Luckily they have some friends in the area that were able to help them out.

Lori: "I kept asking my brother should I bring my skates, he was like yeah I've got a buddy who's got a rink going."

Although shovels and snow plows aren't needed this Christmas, this family's making the best of a brown Christmas on their very own ice rink.

Todd Barsness (Grand Forks Native): "This rink set up since 1997 after the flood so we kind of make it a, every year I come back we kind of always set up a time to come out here and skate...Without any ice I don't know what I'd be doing."

Lori: "So we're just really excited that we're able to skate today."

And with temperatures in the mid-fourties, these folks were the only people skating outside.

Todd Barsness: "First brown Christmas ever for me, it's very weird...I don't even feel like I'm in Grand Forks."

Mark Maurer: Scratch this one off my bucket list, so I'm definitely going to enjoy it...It's a nice capper on the day to be able to do this."

Even though they're not skating on a pond, the family is still happy they're able to continue their family Christmas tradition.

The rink has been a huge hit in the neighborhood since being built in 1997.
