GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — The city-owned Alerus Center in Grand Forks is replacing its artificial turf for University of North Dakota football games.

The Grand Forks Herald reports (http://bit.ly/sV27y7 ) that the arena's management is replacing the turf, which is estimated to cost between $3.5 million to $4 million.

Officials say the new surface will be infill turf. That's a material that comes closer to replicating the feel of natural turf and is easier on the bodies of athletes playing an impact sport.

The city of Grand Forks has issued a request for bids for the work and the city Events Center Commission plans to forward a bid recommendation to the City Council next month. Officials say the work will start in late May and be finished in August. The arena will not be available for events during that time.
