Gopher Goalie Kangas to Have Season-Ending Surgery

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota senior goaltender Alex Kangas needs surgery for a labral tear in his left hip and will miss the rest of the season.

The university says Kangas will undergo surgery Friday. He faces four months of rehabilitation.

The 23-year-old assistant captain has played 108 career games for the Gophers, third most in school history, on his way to a 47-41-16 record.

His .912 career save percentage is a school record and his 2.56 goals-against average is fourth-best all-time.

Kangas has 2,802 career saves. He joins Adam Houser and Kellen Briggs as the only Minnesota goaltenders to post more than 2,800 career saves.

This season Kangas has a 2-5-0 record in eight games. His last victory was a 3-1 home win against Michigan on Nov. 28.
