BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Aeronautics Commission says 2011 was a record year for airline boardings at the state's eight commercial airports.

Boardings increased more than 9 percent from 2010 to total 872,169. Boardings were bolstered by big gains in the western part of the state, where booming oil development is spurring more airline activity. New flights to Las Vegas and Phoenix also are cited.

The Fargo airport was the only one of the eight that saw a drop in boardings over the year. Grand Forks, Minot, Bismarck, Williston, Dickinson, Jamestown and Devils Lake all saw increases. The increases at Williston and Dickinson in the oil patch were 75 percent and 83 percent, respectively.
