BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The number of high school dropouts in North Dakota has dropped, after three straight years of approaching 800.

The North Dakota Education Association says there were 701 dropouts in grades 9-12 last year, down from about 780 in each of the previous three years. The group cites data from the state Department of Public Instruction.

The drop comes on the heels of a conference in June 2009 aimed at finding ways to prevent dropouts. State School Superintendent Wayne Sanstead says marked improvements have been made, and state and local officials are dedicated to continuing the effort.

The third annual North Dakota Dropout Prevention Summit is scheduled June 8-9 at Bismarck State College.
