Political Attack Ads Already Starting

It's still 22 months until the next general election but radio ads are already targeting Senator Kent Conrad.

The American Future Fund, an Iowa-based conservative group, is paying for the radio advertisements. It was just a few months ago when we were seeing ads for the midterm election. Republicans won both open seats for North Dakota in the U.S. Congress.

Now, the new ads are attacking Democrat Conrad for not acting on the growing federal deficit.

Robert Wood, a UND political science professor, says it's unusual to have political ads 22 months before an election and there's evidence to show that they don't work.

"Typically voters just can't pay attention that long. They're not going to, so in some sense it doesn't make sense to get voters all riled up right now about an issue that couldn't possibly keep them upset about for two full years," Wood said.

There are also radio ads supporting Conrad. Those are being paid for by a union-backed group, Commonsense Ten.
