BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Adam Hamm is asking state lawmakers for power to enforce provisions of the new federal health care law.

Hamm told the North Dakota House's Industry, Business and Labor Committee that he's expecting state health insurers to follow the law.

But Hamm says he wants lawmakers to give him enforcement authority.

Hamm is concerned a health insurer could refuse to comply with part of the federal law, and argue that North Dakota regulators don't have authority to do anything about it.

Hamm says federal officials could use that circumstance to push for more federal regulation of North Dakota's insurance market.

The North Dakota Legislature is reviewing a number of health care bills this week.
