The Devils Lake School board has been asked to give its advice on attendance problems the district is having.

Devils Lake Superintendent Dr. Steve Swiontek says attendance has always been a problem, but now it's becoming a bigger issue.

Swiontek says he's asking for the board's help in deciding what to do with students who have more than 10 unexcused absences.

He says he understands there are some kids who have illnesses that will miss days, but others are abusing the absence policy.

Swiontek says attendance at all five schools in the district is a problem and he felt the board should be informed.

Swiontek says its important to "look for their input as well and also bring it to the light of the public so that some of these things are changed."

Unexcused absences include things like truancy, over-sleeping, transportation problems or unverified appointments.

The board agreed to come up with ideas for the next meeting.
