BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem is backing a proposal to require wireless companies to tell law enforcement about the location of a cell phone user.

Grand Forks Rep. Lois Delmore is sponsoring the bill. She says it will only apply in emergencies.

Delmore says the bill arose from a case in Kansas when a wireless company wouldn't help police use a missing girl's cell phone to locate her. She was later found dead.

The North Dakota House's Political Subdivisions Committee reviewed the legislation Thursday. The panel hasn't taken any action.

Stenehjem says cell phone companies support the bill. He says they have been wary about providing locator information because they're worried about being sued for disclosing it.

He says the law would insulate the companies from lawsuits.
