MINNEWAUKAN, N.D. (AP) — The Federal Emergency Management Agency is making $5.8 million in grants available to help the city of Minnewaukan in its battle against the encroaching Devils Lake.

U.S. Sen. John Hoeven and Gov. Jack Dalrymple say the money would require a 10 percent state and local match. It could be used to move buildings and protect critical infrastructure such as sewer lines.

The expanding Devils Lake is threatening to swallow the town of about 300 people. Some buildings already have been moved, along with a highway along the city's east edge. The federal Education Department last fall approved a $6 million grant to move the town's school.

Devils Lake has quadrupled in size since 1993 because of a series of wet years.
