OXBOW, N.D. (AP) — Oxbow Mayor Jim Nyhof says he concerned a 2011 flood will be the biggest the city has had to face.
Nyhof tells The Forum that if the city of about 200 people 15 miles south of Fargo wants to prove it should be protected by the Red River diversion, it will first have to successfully fight an expected flood this spring.
Oxbow officials have taken action.
The city council passed an emergency declaration Wednesday night that will allow reimbursement from state and federal agencies. It also asked Oxbow residents to sign up for flood subcommittees dealing with such issues as sandbagging and scheduling shifts to monitor rising waters.
Nyhof says the current diversion plan would cause water to pool in his city, and he'd like Oxbow to be included.
