Dalrymple Speeds Up Devils Lake Water Control Effort

Gov. Jack Dalrymple said he's ordered an emergency waiver allowing immediate design and construction of a water control structure at Tolna Coulee on Devils Lake.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Gov. Jack Dalrymple said he's ordered an emergency waiver allowing immediate design and construction of a water control structure at Tolna Coulee on Devils Lake.

The order shortens by about two months the State Water Commission's timetable in selecting a design and contractor to build a control structure, which Dalrymple calls "critical" in alleviating flooding at Devils Lake and protecting downstream communities.

Tolna Coulee is a natural outlet into the Sheyenne River, which joins the Red River near Fargo.

State officials also plan to expand Devils Lake's west-end outlet to increase water discharges and build an east-end outlet.
