BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's House has approved a bill to require schools to conduct "lockdown" and other emergency drills.

A lockdown drill is done if there's an intruder in the building. Students take shelter and the school's doors and windows are locked until there's notice that the incident is over.

Many North Dakota schools already do emergency drills. Bismarck Rep. Lisa Meier says it's important to practice them, given recent outbreaks of school violence across the country.

The House approved the bill 90-0 on Tuesday. It now goes to the Senate for another review.

At first the legislation required schools to form committees to plan lockdown drills and said schools needed to hold at least two drills each school year. Those provisions were removed.
