The North Dakota High School Activities Association board has decided it will not require that coaches be certified to work in the state.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota High School Activities Association board has decided it will not require that coaches be certified to work in the state.

The association instead is urging its member schools to have coaches trained in first aid, CPR and concussion injury management.

Association spokeswoman Sheryl Solberg tells The Forum newspaper that the group also is encouraging officials and parents to take those steps.

The association's coaches education committee had recommended the board require all coaches for grades 7-12 to get a permit. The proposal included a $35 four-hour online course. The board decided against a mandate but Solberg says the association would welcome a member-driven movement.
