BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Dakotas were in the deep freeze early Wednesday, though temperatures began to moderate as the day wore along.
The National Weather Service posted warnings and advisories for dangerous wind chills in both North Dakota and South Dakota early Wednesday. Wind can exacerbate the cold's effect on people and animals.
It can be deadly if people don't prepare for it, and the wind chills overnight in the Dakotas dropped lower than 40 below zero in some spots. Several South Dakota schools called off classes for the day.
Actual temperatures rose from as low as minus 29 into the single digits below zero in both states by midday. Weather Service forecasts call for temperatures to reach into the 30s above zero in parts of the region on Thursday.
