Development Homes... a non-profit organization that helps people with disabilities... broke ground today on a new apartment complex for people with autism.

Once the 5-unit complex is built by next summer it will be the only apartment complex of its kind in the entire state.

The complex called Columbia Place is the result of 4 years of work by the community and a HUD grant that will help pay for construction and keep rent low for its tenants.

The apartment will be for people with autism who are able to take care of themselves and live on their own.

There will be 24-hour support for all the people who live there.

Sandi Marshall" The intent of Columbia place is to provide an opportunity fir these young adults who otherwise would not have the opportunity to live in a community and to live in the least restrictive environment."

Development homes will work with the the North East Human services center to identify people who qualify for the homes.
