BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Dakota Athletic Conference has formally announced it is moving forward next year as a four-member league, but its future is far from certain.

The DAC once had 10 members. Because of recent departures it will be down to just Dickinson State, Jamestown College, Mayville State and Valley City State in the fall.

Commissioner LaVern Jessen says the DAC will not have enough schools to remain affiliated with the NAIA, so the schools will be considered independents.

Dickinson State and Jamestown are interested in the Montana-based Frontier Conference. The Great Plains Athletic Conference might be an option for Mayville and Valley City.

Jessen says if even one of the schools leaves, it will the mean the end of the DAC after next year.
