Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- The National Firefighter of the Year is a North Dakotan, a member of the Grand Forks Air Force Base.

Jeffery Rueben is the Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention at the base. Rueben was also recognized at the state level this year as the VFW's North Dakota firefighter of the year.

He says he feels "honored" and "shocked" by winning the awards and he appreciates the support he has received from his fellow firefighters.

Rueben says, "I just like helping people. Everyday is different, we never know what is going to happen at work, and I like that. Giving back to the community and the Air Force, we do a lot of that as well so that's probably my favorite part."

This is the first time the local VFW Post 18-74 had a firefighter win both the state and national award.
