BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota lawmakers are reviewing four bills intended to deter bullying at school.
On Monday the state Senate voted 34-11 to approve the first anti-bullying measure.
It says North Dakota's school superintendent has to develop a model anti-bullying policy by the end of this year. Schools have to adopt a policy by July 2012.
The legislation requires teacher training in ways to stop bullying. It says students have to be offered bullying prevention programs. Parents must be given a copy of the anti-bullying policy.
Portland Sen. Philip Murphy says the bill will help students avoid being bullied.
Bismarck Sen. Margaret Sitte (SIT'-ee) voted against the bill. She says it will take away from students' learning time.
The bill now goes to the North Dakota House. It is SB2167.
