A mom and her 15 year-old daughter face shoplifting charges, after getting caught by a worker at the 13th Avenue Walmart in Fargo. The incident even involved the women's 4 year-old son.

Thirty-five year-old Michelle Ann Sayers and her 15 year-old daughter were seen putting items on themselves and putting things in the shopping cart before leaving Wal-Mart on 13th Avenue on Thursday.

Lt. Joel Vettel – Fargo Police: What is extremely unusual in this case is we have a mother that takes, and not only has children present with her when she is stealing, in this case it appears that the two worked together.

Lt. Joel Vettel says Sayers and her daughter were found with items like a blue tooth head set, birthday cards, and even stole shoes on her 4 year old son.

Lt. Joel Vettel: “People ask that question, was this somebody that was a mother that was stealing to take care of children, and in my estimation no. It was a question of she wanted these items, they made the choice to steal them.”

Social Workers are now looking into the family's situation to make sure it is safe. After this investigation, Sayers could potentially have her children removed from the home.

Rick Van Camp – Cass County Social Services: “It is certainly going to depend on what law enforcement does, if they elect to remove the children because the parents may be arrested and there might not be another care provider available, then we may have to act and intervene.”

Rick Van Camp is a supervisor for Cass County Social Services. Working in the field for 25 years, he has only seen a handful of cases like these each year. Working with the court, they will determine what the best situation will be for the children.

Rick Van Camp: “We have to determine whether the children have been used or somehow brought into the picture to assist in the criminal act.”

Both Vettel and Van Camp hope to get this family gets some much needed intervention to prevent things like this from happening in the future.

Both mother and daughter were arrested and released at the store. Both were cited for shoplifting and could face fines or jail time.
