BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — An assistant attorney general says a man accused of pulling a gun in a courtroom in southwest North Dakota's Adams County tried unsuccessfully to fire at least 10 shots before being subdued.

Prosecutor Jon Byers tells KXMB-TV that Vicente Chacano allegedly pulled the trigger numerous times but the gun didn't go off. Byers says "it was but just a fluke that people weren't murdered."

The alleged incident happened last Friday after Chacano was convicted of sex crimes. His attorney, Richard Edinger, did not immediately return a telephone call to The Associated Press on Tuesday seeking comment.
