BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's House has approved a proposed ban on texting while driving.
The measure imposes a $100 fine and a two-point penalty on the driver's license of anyone caught sending a text message while driving.
Repeat offenders face a four-point license penalty, and a possible yearlong driver's license suspension.
Representatives voted 50-41 on Tuesday to approve the measure. It now goes to the North Dakota Senate for additional work.
The Governors Highway Safety Association says at least 30 states have banned texting while driving. The cities of Bismarck and Grand Forks have approved local ordinances to ban it.
In a separate vote, the House narrowly defeated a proposal to ban "distracted driving." It prohibited texting while driving and other types of "distracted" behavior while driving.
