Community Comes Together For Doug States

Even with insurance a serious illness can leave a family with thousands of dollars in medical expenses. Today the community came together to help a Bisbee man diagnosed with cancer. Doug States has stage 4 lung cancer. Tonight people came out for a potluck and dance benefit to show their support for States and his family.

Doug States says he's been to many benefits for other people...but this benefit in Bisbee was for him. His life changed forever after a doctor's visit this past June.

Doug States: "I'd started having some pains when I was out doing some farm work and we went to the doctor to see what that was all about and he found a cyst."

He was diagnosed with lung cancer. He's now finished with radiation, but he still has one last state of chemotherapy to go through. His wife, Lynn, says the diagnosis was devastating.

Lynn States: "I have a little bit more idea than he does about what he's going through because both of my parents died of cancer."

Doug States: "It's been really hard for us. We've just been married for a couple years and we were kind of looking forward to the rest of our lives."

With thousands of dollars in medical bills, the Stateses are getting some help. There was food, a silent auction, and a band as people came out to support them tonight. Money raised will go toward those medical bills.

Lynn States: "This is a wonderful community to live in and the people here are very supportive."

For now Doug and Lynn States are trying to be optimistic and are hoping the treatment helps slow the progression of the cancer. They still aren't sure what States's prognosis is.

Doug States: "We really don't know if it's months or if it's years."
