Officials Plan for Likely Bridge Closings

What is the plan in case bridges in Grand Forks-East Grand Forks have to close because of flooding?

That's what a group of city planners and engineers talked about Wednesday.

Last year, the Point and Sorlie Bridges closed, leaving just one connection open between the two cities. Because of that, the only bridge left open, the Kennedy Bridge, saw increased traffic.

Wednesday, Engineers talked about ways to make it easier to get around town if bridges close. Things like detour routes, changing traffic signal times and switching stop signs.

They'll also try to make sure trains aren't stopping traffic during busy times of the day.

"From what I've seen for predictions, there's a very good possibility we'll have to close at least the Point, possibly the Sorlie. After that, I'm not 100 percent sure," city engineer Dean Rau said.

The Point bridge will close at a 44' level, the Sorlie at 47' and the Kennedy at 52'.

The latest flood outlook shows a 50 percent chance the Red River will hit 50' in Grand Forks-East Grand Forks.
