BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's Senate has confirmed a biology professor for the state Board of Higher Education. A review board had recommended that Kirsten Diederich's nomination be rejected.

Senators voted 36-10 on Tuesday to confirm Diederich for the board. She has been serving for the last six months since former Gov. John Hoeven appointed her to succeed former board member Sue Andrews.

In a separate vote, senators voted 46-0 to confirm Duaine Espegard (duh-WAYNE' ESS'-puh-gard) for a second term on the board. Espegard is a retired banker and former North Dakota state senator.

The Senate review board voted 3-1 to recommend that Diederich's nomination be rejected. Hazen Sen. Randy Christmann said he didn't think Diederich would push for change in North Dakota's higher education system.
