Grand Forks Girl Gets to Be Mayor for a Day

There is a new mayor in Grand Forks.

Well, at least for the day.

Allison McHugo, a fourth grader at Holy Family - St. Mary's Elementary School, was chosen to be mayor for the day through an essay contest.

As part of City Government week, 268 fourth graders wrote about what they would do for the community if they could be mayor.

Second place went to Samantha Krogfoss, who also goes to Holy Family.

Mayor Michael Brown was there to hear ideas from the two girls.

"If I were mayor for a day, I would visit schools and support community resources I would visit people of all ages and make important speeches," Allison said.

"I would ask the citizens to use less water and less electricity. I would encourage the people to get outside and play so your bones would get healthy," Samantha said.

Both girls and their parents were invited to Mayor Brown's state of the city address next week.
