A Thief River Falls man arrested after a drug deal and death near Thief River Falls was sentenced Thursday to 90 days in jail.

20-year-old Daniel Molstad had pleaded guilty to two drug counts.

Police say they got a call April 26th from a nurse after 23-year-old Matthew Sheppard was dropped off at the Thief River Falls emergency room with stab wounds. Sheppard later died from those wounds.

Police say Sheppard and three other men had taken Molstad out to the country to beat him up over drugs and owed money.

The complaint says Molstad told authorities he thought the men were going to kill him, and that he pulled out a knife and swung it in an attempt to defend himself while the men, including Sheppard were beating and kicking him. Molstad says the men left him in the ditch.

Molstad was not charged in relation to the stabbing death.

He will be on supervised probation for five years.
