GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — A former employee of a Cando cooperative says he was wrongfully fired when he complained that he was owed money for overtime work.

Paul Belzer has filed a federal lawsuit asking for $500,000 in damages from Cando Farmers Grain and Oil Cooperative, Inc. The cooperative says the complaint is frivolous and should be thrown out.

Belzer says was fired after he asked about his claim with the state Department of Labor for overtime wages. The cooperative says Belzer was fired for poor performance and his manager didn't know about the wage complaint.

The cooperative says it cooperated with the labor investigation, which showed Belzer was owed more than $2,000. Belzer was seeking more than $12,000 in back pay.
