MOORHEAD – A 54 year-old Moorhead man accused of molesting two children at his wife’s home day care center here pleaded guilty this morning in a plea deal that calls for a 15 year term in state prison.

Jon Ralph Pabody faced two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct for molesting two girls, ages 3 and 7 at the time, at his wife’s home day care at 2709 14th St. S. within the past three years.

He admitted to the sexual abuse in tearful testimony this morning in Clay County District Court.

The mother of the older victim told The Forum that while she wanted to avoid a trial to spare her daughter the pain of testifying, she’d have preferred Pabody serve a longer prison term.

“It’s never enough time,” she said.

The deal prosecutors and the defense struck calls for just a year less prison time than state guidelines would have suggested. Pabody will be officially sentenced on Aug. 20.

Pam Harris, an assistant Clay County Attorney, said she plans to request at the sentencing that Pabody be placed on supervised probation for life and be considered for civil commitment.
