New Airport Terminal Construction On Schedule, On Budget

Construction of a new Grand Forks Airport terminal is right on schedule and it's coming in on budget. The new terminal is twice the size of the current terminal, which allows for more seating, bigger security areas and a one-of-a-kind café.

Construction of a new Grand Forks Airport terminal is right on schedule and it's coming in on budget.

Passenger boardings are up 30 percent at the airport, and airport authority members expect that statistic to keep going up when the new terminal opens.

The new terminal, a $23 million project, is starting to take shape.

The Airport Authority hopes planes will be flying out of the Byron L. Dorgan terminal by mid-summer.

"The bulk of the works that's left, finishing painting of the facility, the flooring and some of the final touches," GFK executive director Patrick Dame said.

The new terminal is twice the size of the current terminal, which allows for more seating, bigger security areas and a one-of-a-kind café.

"We hope to have the full ability to serve both the secure and non-secure sides and that's a big accomplishment for small airports," Dame said.

Dame says the building is energy efficient, which will cut utility costs in half.

"About the same costs of the current terminal building, which is half the size, so we are pretty excited about the decrease in energy costs," Dame said.

Dame says they are also building a bigger parking lot which will allow for more short-term parking.
