Just shortly before 3 a.m. Friday, the Grand Forks Fire Department was called to 443 Campbell Drive. They found a section of the home engulfed in flames and the home filled with smoke.

"They entered the front of the structure with the hose line and then extinguished the fire from there, " says Capt. Bruce Weymier.

Shortly before the Fire Department arrived, next door neighbors did try to help. Not wanting to go on camera, they told WDAZ it was about at 2:45 a.m. that their neighbor banged on the door wearing only his pajamas and no shoes. He told them his house was on fire and his wife was still inside. After calling 911, they went next door and tried to get in, but they said the doors were locked. With flames coming out of the window, they said there was nothing they could do to save the man's wife. Police arrived and told them to just wait for the fire department.

Firefighters had to fight the flames in the early morning freezing temperatures.

"It is never easy in the cold. We made sure we rotated crews, made sure that nobody had any frost bite" said Capt Bruce Weymier.
