Gov. Jack Dalrymple is asking for a presidential disaster declaration in North Dakota to help prepare for spring flooding.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Gov. Jack Dalrymple is asking for a presidential disaster declaration in North Dakota to help prepare for spring flooding.

Specifically, the governor said the state needs help for emergency protection in 17 counties and two American Indian reservations.

Dalrymple said a disaster declaration would help pay expenses for cities and counties as they prepare for flooding. A presidential declaration allows the federal government to cover 75 percent of eligible costs.

The governor asked that a declaration be retroactive to Feb. 14 when statewide flood preparation began.
