MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Officials say the Minot Air Force Base had an estimated impact on the local economy of slightly more than half a billion dollars in fiscal 2010.
Lt. Col Barry Eddins with the base's 5th Comptroller Squadron says the $514 million economic impact was up from $474 million the previous fiscal year. That's a jump of more than 8 percent.
The Minot Daily News reports that the increase is attributed in large part to the addition of a second B-52 bomber squadron at the base, which also oversees Minuteman III missiles in underground silos in the region.
The base's estimated impact on the economy is compiled using Defense Department guidelines and released annually.
