3 North Dakotans to Race in Iditarod

Three North Dakota mushers will be representing the state in the 39th Iditarod sled dog race in Alaska next month.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Three North Dakota mushers will be representing the state in the 39th Iditarod sled dog race in Alaska next month.

The ceremonial start of the Iditarod is Saturday, when the teams depart Anchorage and sled to Willow for the start. From there it is 1,082 miles to the finish line in Nome.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that Bismarck native Heather Siirtola will be participating in her fourth Iditarod. And Ellen Halvorson, originally from eastern North Dakota and living in Alaska since 1998 also will be in the lineup.

For Beach native Kelly Maixner, it's a first.
